We have an awesome story for you today that perfectly shows the lifelong impact of a worthy cause close to our hearts! Many years ago our friend Drew was experiencing terrible pain and shortness of breath. He was admitted to Children’s National Hospital where he was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease, a very painful blood condition that can lead to dangerous complications like stroke and organ failure! Drew’s treatment was an experimental clinical trial of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant from his baby sister. Following several months of treatment, Drew achieved a complete recovery, liberating him from the grasp of this terrible disease. 
During his care, Drew met an amazing doctor who’s passion was to give hope & joy during tough moments. She started a gardening program, giving every child in their care the gift of experiencing nature, even those with the most complicated situations! As Drew reflects on this challenging time you can hear how impactful these moments were for him and so many others. “You just saw the joy in the kids’ faces! For all of us, it took our minds off of the really hard road ahead…”
As Drew grew up he took that experience unconsciously into his career, as he served his community as a plumber he saw families that could be helped in the same way this program helped him. “As we helped heal their homes, I thought what more can we do? So many families we visit live in food deserts where junk is often their only option.” After meeting with families Drew volunteered his own time to help them start vegetable gardens of their very own, creating uncountable small backyard gardens over his career!
But it gets better! Many years after Drew’s treatment, as he sought more ways to give back to his community he connected with our local food council & non-profit garden programs in our community. Here he recognized someone familiar that he hadn’t seen since he was a kid, the head of this program was the same doctor that made the gardening program that inspired Drew so many years ago!
