In a 7-2 majority, Loudoun County’s School Board voted, after hours of deliberation, that LCPS classes will be taking place 100% online this Fall. This decision replaced the board’s previous motion for a hybrid learning classroom, which was voted into place on June 29th.

After making a final decision on the matter a week after LCPS’s deadline, the board can now focus on how to implement online learning to be inclusive and enriching for all students. Ian Serotkin, of the Blue Ridge District, voiced concern about the challenges vulnerable students may face without face-to-face education. But now that the decision has been made, deliberation on how to accommodate for special-education students, English-learning students, families with working parents, and those without access to wireless internet can begin.

The safety of students and staff was the top priority in this ruling, and all complications associated with online learning will be addressed in the following weeks. Many are disappointed that students and teachers will not be able to have traditional instruction, but for now, keeping Loudoun County residences safe was decreed paramount. However, despite it not being widely discussed, there are many benefits to online learning that parents can look forward to this Fall. Online learning gives students the unique opportunity to…

  1. Work at their own pace
  2. Demonstrate and learn self-motivation
  3. Customize their learning environment, so they are comfortable to engage with students and teachers
  4. Learn technical skills in a world where technology has taken over
  5. Review entire course material repeatedly, not just reviewing messy notes they took
  6. Develop self-discipline, time management, and refined critical-thinking skills

Although certain hindrances come with the lack of social interaction that face-to-face education offers, among others, this short-lived online setting will enable students to learn new skills and stay safe until they can return to classes part-time, and eventually, full-time. With that being said, The Reynolds Team wishes all LCPS students and teachers a fantastic school year this Fall, and we look forward to the day things go back to normal!
