I hope this letter finds you well. I’m reaching out to you today because my good friend Linde, a fellow EmpowerHome Team Realtor, shared a difficult journey with me. About a year ago, she received the heartbreaking news that she had breast cancer, for the second time. Through more surgeries and treatment she defeated cancer for the second time. After this challenging recovery she felt the need to prove to herself that she was still the person she knew, that she still had fight in her. I copied what she sent me below, I couldn’t recap as well as this!

“For my 40th birthday I embarked for the summit of Uruhu Peak, Mt Kilimanjaro 19,341 ft. Starting a new decade of my life on ‘The Roof of Africa’. I needed to know my body was still physically strong after this last year. Without a doubt, this was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life; challenging me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Staying in tents with wet clothes that wouldn’t dry, not showering for 9 days, waking up before sunrise and being in bed by 7:30 pm, climbing for 6-7 hours daily across incredibly difficult terrain. I not only learned to be comfortable with the uncomfortable, I opened the door and eagerly welcomed it in like a box of Girl Scout cookies. After 16 grueling hours over those long days, I had both ascended and descended Mt. Kilimanjaro, utterly exhausted.”

Wow wow wow! Reading this I was left stunned by how inspirational this was to see this strong team member and friend go from surgery fighting off cancer twice to the top of the world! not quite the top, but close enough! 😉 I was thinking also about all those fighting breast cancer in our Charlotte community. Some of them anxiously nearing the summit of their own victorious fight against cancer, and many fearfully setting out on this hard journey. I know it will be uncomfortable for them, it will be challenging, and they can’t do it on their own. This fight is different for everyone, but for each it’s made easier through the support they receive along the way.

So why am I telling you this? I have been giving back to Go Jen Go for many years because of how much they help patients and survivors in our community. Their mission is to help these patients become survivors by providing financial support for families so they can focus on the fight ahead of them. I find myself continually thinking about the families they serve, and have looked for every opportunity to help. This is why we’re so passionate about helping families through real estate, it allows us to support worthy causes like Go Jen Go. Helping families through the purchase or sale of a home and fighting for them everyday is an incredible responsibility that we don’t take lightly!

Thank You,
Kristen Bernard
