Entering into a new year is a very symbolic time for us. It offers a universal moment to reflect on our mistakes, our accomplishments, and to set goals to continue to grow professionally and individually. The end of a decade couldn’t be a more momentous occasion—as we reflect, we’re feeling nostalgic about the memories we’ve made, accomplishments we’ve achieved, and how far we’ve come since 2010.
Typically, a New Year’s Resolution consists of what you want to achieve in the next year, but for the start of the new decade, there’s no better time to set both short-term and long-term goals for what improvements you want to see in yourself over the next 10 years. Setting short-term goals seems pretty straight-forward to most of us—we want to go to the gym every day, we want to read 50 books, we want to travel more, etc. We are used to this type of goal setting, but when it comes to setting goals for the long-term, we can sometimes get ahead of ourselves, or lose sight of the promises we have committed to.
The Reynolds Team, as a business, has been conditioned to set both long-term and short-term goals to achieve success. We understand the best strategies for creating, keeping, and modifying long-term goals, so we have devised this list of tips to help you plan and commit to yours!
Set Attainable/Realistic Goals: Don’t make goals that are too absurd. If you commit to making 10 million dollars over the next decade, make sure you can actually achieve that by running numbers and being realistic. Likewise, it’s not practical to make a goal never to eat cake again—you’re setting yourself up for failure!
Make an Outline: Part of making an attainable goal is creating an online that includes the process of how you’re going to reach it. Basically, a bunch of short-term goals equals your long-term goal.
Keep Track: Have a notebook where you can track your progress and physically cross out/check-off items when you have reached a milestone.
Reward Yourself: Giving yourself a vacation, time off, or a gift of some sort will keep you motivated to stay on track.
Never Give Up: If you aren’t reaching the milestones you have set for yourself, don’t get discouraged. This is the time to modify your goal with the circumstances that have arisen. As long as you’re trying your best, changing the goal as time passes isn’t a problem!
We hope that you have a wonderful new year, and hope this next decade brings you prosperity and happiness!
